Facing flak over Covid response, Mamata govt transfers Bengal health secretary

The Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government, which has come under severe criticism in recent weeks over its response to coronavirus, on Tuesday transferred Health Secretary Vivek Kumar.

The 1990 batch IAS officer of West Bengal cadre, who was posted as Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department in December, has been transferred to the Environment Department.

Narayan Swaroop Nigam, erstwhile Transport Secretary has been appointed as Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, the Bengal government said on Tuesday.

An Inter Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) visiting Bengal state had earlier pulled up the health department over mismanagement of Covid data.

The central team had submitted its report to the central government stating that several guidelines had been flouted by the state.

Last month, the secretary of Bengal food and civil supplies department, Manoj Agarwal, was removed following reports of protests in parts of the state over irregular supply of ration though the PDS.
